RYA First Aid
Essential for anyone involved with the sea, this one-day RYA First Aid course is aimed at anyone ‘going afloat’ and covers all standard first aid topics with a focus on boating-specific scenarios.
When you’re out on the water, your knowledge and skills can be the critical link in providing aid until professional help arrives and, in remote locations, first aid knowledge is often life-saving. Being able to adeptly respond to emergency situations in a maritime environment is crucial, so join us to gain the vital skills and knowledge needed, should the worst happen.
Course Overview- Duration: One day
- Focus: Standard first aid topics with additional boating-specific topics
- Importance: Equips you to handle medical emergencies on the water, potentially saving lives in remote areas
This course meets the requirements for:
- Professional Skippers: Operating craft sailing less than 60 miles from a safe haven
- Offshore Racers: Complying with ISAF’s regulations
The course is recommended by the MCA – Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the HSE – Health and Safety Executive.
Course Content
- The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs
- The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient
- The recognition and treatment of a person in seizure
- The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including an overview of AEDs
- The ability to recognise and safely treat a patient who is choking
- The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding
- The keeping of simple records following an accident
The subjects specific to boating include
- The recovery position in a confined space
- Drowning
- Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
- Seasickness and dehydration
- Medical assistance or advice by VHF
- Helicopter rescue
- Category C Medical Stores
Pre-course requirements
- None, however you must be 18 years for the Category C Medical Stores endorsement.
