Course Overview

  • Introduction to Sailing: This RYA course usually begins with an introduction to sailing terminologies, parts of the boat, and basic safety procedures. Participants will learn essential knots and how to handle lines (ropes) onboard.
  • Onshore Briefings: Before setting sail, participants receive comprehensive briefings on various aspects of sailing, including safety procedures, basic navigation and the importance of teamwork on a yacht.
  • Practical Sailing Sessions: Participants will get hands-on experience as they learn how to prepare a yacht for sailing, including hoisting sails, handling ropes, steering the boat, and adjusting sails according to wind conditions. Our practical sessions often take place both in sheltered estuary waters and out at sea, allowing participants to experience different sailing environments and conditions.
  • Basic Manoeuvres: Instructors teach participants basic manoeuvres such as tacking (turning the boat through the wind), gybing (changing the direction of the boat with the wind behind) and docking manoeuvres.
  • Safety Training: Safety is absolutely paramount in sailing, so participants will learn the essential safety drills, including man overboard procedures and what to do in case of emergencies.
  • Theory Sessions: Alongside practical sailing sessions, there are usually theory sessions covering topics such as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), weather forecasting and the effects of tides and currents.
  • Certification: Upon completion of the course, students will receive an RYA Start Yachting certificate.
