RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) – Online

£49.00

In April 2012 it became mandatory for commercial endorsement holders to complete this online course.

It is a short course designed to provide essential knowledge and understanding of professional practices and responsibilities and covers the legal framework you need to adhere to in your status as a commercial operator.

Who Needs to Take the Course?

  • New Applicants: All new applicants for the commercial endorsement must complete the course before submitting their application to the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).
  • Existing Endorsement Holders: Those who obtained their endorsement before April 2012 are required to complete the course before their next revalidation. More details are available through the link on the right.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Regardless of your specific job on board, in the commercial maritime world, you are considered a professional seafarer. This equates your responsibilities with those of a cruise liner captain. You have a duty of care to your crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held accountable if something goes wrong. Your tasks might include:

  • Delivering a new 35’ yacht
  • Operating a workboat with lifting and towing equipment
  • Managing a superyacht in the Mediterranean

Course Format and Support

This is an interactive online course, including the examination. Falmouth School of Sailing will enrol you in the course. Our instructors will be available to assist you with any queries during the online course.

Course Content

  • The commercial environment – how you fit into the professional maritime world
  • People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels
  • Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment, how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures

Exemptions from this course

  • MCA Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch
  • MCA Master 200gt STCW qualification
  • Master 500gt STCW qualification

You will need to send the RYA a copy of your MCA certificate with your application or renewal form for your commercial endorsement.

Updating your PPR certificate

Initial PPR Course

After completing your first PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities) course, you will not need to take any further tests at subsequent renewals of your commercial endorsement.

Although your certificate might indicate it is valid for only five years, the RYA has updated its policies to state that the PPR qualification now has no expiry date.

Renewal Process

For each renewal of your commercial endorsement, simply send a copy of your original downloaded PPR certificate.
There is no need for additional testing or coursework upon renewal.

Note: if you are over 65 and required to undergo more frequent medical fitness examinations, you do not need to submit your PPR certificate with every medical renewal. You will only need to provide your PPR certificate when your commercial endorsement is due for renewal, which typically occurs every five years.
