RYA Offshore Personal Survival Course (RYA/World Sailing)

Designed for recreational and racing skippers and crew who may encounter rough weather and emergencies at sea, the 2-day World Sailing Offshore Safety Course provides the essential training needed to prepare for offshore sailing with confidence.
Through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical, hands-on exercises, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to prevent, manage and respond effectively to a wide range of onboard emergencies. Training includes the use of essential safety equipment and realistic scenarios, ensuring you are well prepared for the challenges of offshore sailing.
Course Structure- Day One
RYA World Sailing Offshore Safety: Half-day course focusing on safety precautions and procedures aboard yachts operating in open waters. - Day Two
RYA Sea Survival: Classroom-based theoretical session followed by practical training using life jackets, and inflatable life rafts in a swimming pool.
- Certification Requirement: Required by 50% of crews participating in offshore racing.
- Recommended for Offshore Passages: Ideal for sailors or crew considering offshore passages or ocean crossings.
- RYA Offshore Personal Survival Course (RYA/World Sailing) Certification: To obtain the full certification, participants must complete both this course and the one-day RYA Sea Survival course. On successful completion of the course, you will receive a World Sailing Offshore Safety Certificate.
- Optional First Aid Course: While not mandatory for the certificate, attending the one-day RYA First Aid course is recommended. Some races may require a certain number of crew to hold this certification.
- This comprehensive course meets the eligibility requirements of Section 6.01 of the World Sailing (formerly ISAF) Offshore Special Regulations for Category 0, Category 1 and selected Category 2 offshore races.
Course Content
Day 1: RYA World Sailing Offshore Safety Course – Theory
- Care & maintenance of safety equipment
- Storm sails
- Damage control
- Crew routines
- Man overboard prevention and recovery
- Giving assistance to other craft
- SAR organisation and methods
- Practical fire precautions and fire fighting
- Distress alerting and survivor location aids
Day 2: RYA Sea Survival Course – Theory & Practical
- Types of emergency situations such as collision, fire, sinking
- Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships
- Equipment in survival craft
- Location of personal life-saving appliances
- Principles concerning survival
Practical session:
- Donning a life jacket
- Righting an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket
- Swimming while wearing a life jacket
- Keeping afloat
- Boarding a life raft from ship and water while wearing a life jacket
- Taking initial actions on boarding a life raft to enhance chance of survival
- Streaming a drogue or sea anchor
- Operating location devices, including radio equipment
