The RYA Competent Crew course is a beginner’s guide to cruising under sail, perfect for complete beginners and those seeking to become an active crew member on board a yacht. 

During the course students will learn practical navigation, pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and watch skippering techniques amongst other skills, and, by the end of the 5-days, students will be able to competently steer a yacht and assist in all of the daily onboard routines.

Course Overview

  • Duration: The RYA Competent Crew course spans five days, providing comprehensive instruction and practical experience.
  • Location: Courses are conducted from the historic Port of Falmouth, located in the scenic surroundings of Cornwall.
  • Course Structure: Each course typically begins at 1700 hrs on a Sunday and concludes around 1200 hrs on the following Friday. The course will include a mix of Competent Crew, Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper participants.
  • Flexibility: We understand the importance of flexibility in scheduling. If you prefer alternative dates for an exclusive course with friends or family, we’ll try our best to accommodate your preferences.
  • Safety Briefing: The course commences with a full safety briefing from our experienced instructors.
  • Experience: Depending on weather conditions, participants will experience a gentle voyage to the first overnight anchorage, mooring buoy, or pontoon.
  • Itinerary: We do not set a fixed itinerary due to weather variability. Your instructor will aim to maximise sailing opportunities, including visits to ports along the south west coastline. 
  • Certification: Successful completion of the course leads to the award of the RYA Competent Crew certificate.
  • Night Passage: Participants will experience at least one four-hour night passage, providing a unique and memorable sailing experience.

Accommodation and Meals

  • Onboard Accommodation: Participants stay onboard the yacht during the course.
  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch are provided daily throughout the course. Evening meals are provided for four out of the five nights, with one night reserved for dining out at participants’ expense. Cooking roles are shared among the crew, fostering teamwork and a sense of camaraderie.
  • Dietary Requirements: We strive to accommodate individual dietary requirements to the best of our ability, although offerings may be limited at times due to space constraints. Please advise us when booking.
