RYA Teaching in the Classroom (TIC)
The Teaching in the Classroom (TIC) course develops the key skills required to become a classroom-based RYA instructor. A pre-course online module introduces the fundamentals of learning theory and provides practical techniques for student-centered teaching. These techniques are then applied, practiced, and refined during the one-day classroom session.
Successful instructors engage with students both personally and professionally. They must be able to teach and assess knowledge in a structured, engaging, and flexible manner, backed by a deep understanding of the subject that extends beyond the syllabus.
Course Content
- Online pre-learning module (1–2 hours)
- One-day classroom session led by an RYA Teaching in the Classroom Trainer
- Preparation of a lesson between online module and classroom session
- Delivery of prepared lessons during the classroom session
- Feedback from the Trainer to refine teaching skills
- Lesson subjects allocated based on candidate experience or upcoming Instructor Course
Validity

This certificate does not expire; however, the shorebased instructor courses it supports are valid for five years.
Pre-Course Requirements & Certificates
- Minimum age: 18
- Current RYA Membership
- First Aid Certificate
- RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Certificate
- Health Declaration Form or Medical Questionnaire
Course Details
Completion of the TIC course is required to teach any of the RYA shorebased courses, unless you already hold one of the following qualifications or appointments:
- Yachtmaster™ Instructors
- Trainers in Dinghy, Keelboat, Multihull, Windsurfing, Wing, Powerboat, Personal Watercraft, or Inland Waterways Schemes
- Holders of a valid subject-specific RYA Shorebased Instructor certificate
- Holders of a professional teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE or CertEd)
- Holders of IMO Train the Trainer 6.09
The TIC course must be completed before attending any of the following Shorebased Instructor courses (unless you hold one of the qualifications above):
- RYA Shorebased Navigation Instructor (to teach RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship, Day Skipper Theory, and Yachtmaster™ Theory courses)
- RYA Diesel Engine Instructor
- RYA First Aid Instructor
- RYA Marine Radio (SRC) Assessor
- RYA Radar Instructor
- RYA Basic Sea Survival Instructor
Note: After completing a subject-specific Shorebased Instructor course, you may be asked to complete the TIC course if you have not already done so.
